You may have heard about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), but perhaps you are unsure of where to begin?

In general terms, SEO is the process of optimising a web page to make it appear more relevant to the search engine that scans it. This is done with the use of keywords, inbound links and also the creation of high-quality content. Here is how you can include these things into your site to help you rank better in search results.

1. Keywords and phrases

The use of keywords and phrases is crucial for SEO. The aim is to build a list of keywords and phrases that are relevant to your product and are the kinds of things your customers will search for and use them throughout your page. To be sure that Google, for instance, views your content as relevant, you must do the following:

– Create a broad range of keywords and phrases including synonyms and related words.

– The keywords must be related to your business and be keywords you would like to rank for.

– Don’t overuse the same keyword/phrase in your content (known as stuffing) as this impacts SEO negatively.

2. Inbound links

‘What are inbound links?’, you may be asking. Well, these are positive referrers that deem your content as important and relevant to others. When a search engine crawls and indexes, it can tell which sites are linking back to yours. If you have a lot of quality sites linking to your web page, it will assume that your content is relevant and important. It will then push your site up in the search results so people can find it easily.

Be careful though, bad links can also occur when disreputable sites link to yours. This creates a negative spam score and shoves your page further down in the search results. Avoid buying links or getting them from sites that are dodgy (pornography, medication websites, etc) and you’ll avoid this.

3. High-quality content

Last but not least – the creation of high-quality content. If you create long content with a range of images and keywords, search engines will love you. If you write content that is a minimum of 1500 words and is full of useful information, including media such as quality images, video and infographics, this will gain you links, will be full of fruitful keywords and phrases and will, therefore, be an absolute gold mine for search engines.

If you follow these simple steps, you should start to see your website gain traction. If not, take a look at your keywords and try again.
